If you’re completely new to the concept of affiliate marketing, you’ll find this article useful before diving in!

Basically, as an affiliate marketer, you act as a middleman between a sales company and a consumer.

Consumers are looking for products or services, sales companies and providers are trying to find consumers.

The internet is a huge marketplace, and there are so many consumers and service providers that it is often difficult for people to find the right service, and harder still for companies to reach the right customers.

That’s where you come in.

When you join an affiliate scheme, what normally happens is this: you agree to promote a company by placing advertisements on your websites or blogs. People using your website see the adverts, click the link, buy the product or use the service, and you get paid a commission as a result. In other words, you’ve acted as a middleman, bringing in new business to a company who then reward you by paying you a commission.

Some programs (like Google AdSense) pay you every time some-one clicks on one of the ads displayed on your sites. Some (like products you sell through ClickBank.com) pay you a flat commission only when a customer buys a product or subscribes to a service. Others still (good examples include Cash Burners and SFI) pay you not only for sales you make, but also for sales that people you personally refer make, too. This is called Multi-Level-Marketing, or MLM.

There are literally hundreds of affiliate programs on the net, some of them targeted at very specific niches. All of them are suitable for some people, some are suitable for all, and all require different levels of sales ability, people skills, website building skills and product knowledge. You should do at least a little research on any program before deciding to join.

As a beginner, it is definitely a good idea to sign up for an account with Google AdSense, as this is by far the most popular affiliate program on the net (just think how many websites you have seen displaying Google ads). Their program is very simple to use and is a great place to learn.

If you don’t have a website or blog, I suggest you sign up with Google’s Blogger service, as they make it even easier to incorporate Google Ads into the page. Also, blogging will give you invaluable experience to prepare you for more advanced forms of affiliate marketing.

You will find many tools to help you choose an affiliate marketing program on our site, and we take pains to ensure that we only recommend programs that are safe to use and are not scams.

It is a sad fact that the internet is full of scams and people who want to rip you off. As a beginner, you should be mindful that any program that sounds too good to be true probably is, and that no affiliate marketing scheme should require you to pay a fee to join. By their very nature, affiliate programs should be free to join and use, after all, paying someone to pay you would be a little odd!

I suggest you take a look through some of the ‘beginners guides’ and ‘hints and tips’ articles within our blog for more information and to get you started. You may also contact us for more help and advice using the form provided.

Good luck!
